CGU Fine Wines Retail Tasting Session 2 - CGU / The Withers Winery
Date: Dec 09/19, Mon Time: 18:00:00-19:00:00 Style: Sit-Down
Prior to owning a winery, founder Andrew Tow was an entrepreneur in the media and telecommunications industry. As wine was always a hobby and passion for him, he started out making a few barrels of wine for friends and family to enjoy, with winemaker and friend David Low. Curious if his wine would be of interest on the commercial level, Tow introduced his wines to retailers and restaurants in New York, only to find there was a mass appeal and an overwhelming amount of positive response for it. Thus, several years later in 2013, The Withers label was launched and their first vintage was available to the public.
The name, The Withers, was inspired by the equestrian term defined as the place from which a horse's height is measured. Thus, the winery was named in the spirit of striving for heights in quality and wine production. The horse featured on all his labels is the Irish Connemara pony, Mr. Burgess, who has been a member of the family for almost 15 years. Tows' wife, Kathleen, is an accomplished equestrian focusing on dressage riding and working with Mr. Burgess daily. It is through his passion for wine and his wife's passion for horses where the name of the winery came to be.
Since 2013, The Withers Winery has garnered high praise. Their Rose received a score of 91 points from Vinous Media and was also an Editor's Choice selection from Wine Spectator and a Best Buys choice of the Wine Enthusiast. In 2014, it was named one of the five best Roses from around the world by Lettie Teague.
Tow's wines are elegant, nuanced, and balanced without sacrificing flavour, complexity or intensity. His philosophy is to never release wine that he would not want to drink himself. He created a label that reflects the type of wines he originally set out to make for himself and serve to family and friends but now is available to the public.
