Our friend Lorrie McKenzie, owner of The Wine Bank, is involved in another venture on the Naramata Bench in British Columbia. Lorrie and her business partner, Dr. Gaurav Puri, look forward to introducing FWR Members to a barrel tasting of their 2014 Cab/Merlot vintage (tasting notes below).
Fine Wine Reserve members who have purchased their wine have the privilege of staying at their beautiful vineyard property when in British Columbia. For an 90 second video overview of this property, please click on "Naramata Vineyard Property" below.
Tasting Notes:
2014 Cab / Merlot Vintage
Merlot 47%
Cabernet Franc 47%
Petite Verdot 6%
Winemakers: Anne Vawter and David Paterson
The wine is blended from different lots that have been co-fermented together. Some in barrels for 45 days (whole berry in the barrel) and some in tank with long maceration. It will remain in barrels for another few months and bottled in August.
The fruit comes from same South Okanagan vineyard as their Cab/Syrah blend, $8000 per ton for fruit and cropped back to 2 to 2½ tons an acre.
The wine is a collaboration of two winemakers, California cult winemaker Anne Vawter, and New Zealander, David Paterson. Anne is the owner/winemaker at Red Mare Vineyards in Calistoga, CA. and was for four years assistant winemaker to Heidi Barrett, owner of cult winery, Paradigm. Heidi Barrett started making wine for Screaming Eagle in 1992 and holds the world record for the highest price ever paid for a bottle of wine at the 2000 Napa Valley Wine Auction for $500,000.
Their on-site Okanagan winemaker is David Paterson, a celebrated and experienced Kiwi import who is head winemaker at Tantalus vineyards, where they custom crush their vintages. David has been overseer for both wines: the 2014 Cab/Merlot and the 2015 Cab/Syrah blends.
